E3 1999 – C&C Tiberian Sun Preview

About Westwood Studios…
Westwood Studios was formed by Brett W. Sperry and Louis Castle in 1985. The company released games such as Mars Saga,Battletech, Dragon Strike and Eyes of the Beholder. In 1992, Westwood released two legendary titles, The Legend of Kyrandia Book I and Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty.  Soon after came Command & Conquer and C&C: Red Alert.

C&C: Red Alert was a fun game but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the original.  Perhaps I thought it would be similar to the original? The units are smaller than the original C&C. which gave access to many units to manage on the screen.  And, my  favorite factions weren’t represented in the game: GDI (Global Defense Initiative) and NOD (Brotherhood of Nod).

C&C: Tiberian Sun At E3…
I was happy to get a chance to play C&C: Tiberian Sun at E3.   I met up with  Aaron Cohen of Westwood and Theodore (Ted) Morris at the Westwood Studios booth. Much as been improved in the game. Things like the graphics and the gameplay were noticed.

The game is different in the sense that it’s much harder to tank rush and air strike rush which can make a difference when a player builds and defends their base. Likely won’t affect the skilled players though, new tactics will develop.

C&C: Tiberian Sun will be change from the traditional 2D-display to a fully 3D-rendered world. Units move more realistic, the terrain can be deformed by weapons fire, making it difficult to build on. Fortification of the base is said to be larger where building walls around your base will be a must. Tiberium harvesters now harvest two types of tiberium: green and blue. The Blue Tiberium is more powerful, but more dangerous for infantry.

Another thing that was very interesting was the map editor. You can add terrain, tiberium and the water on the maps rather than the piece by piece work found in the original C&C.

Overall, I am happy that I got a chance to see the return of GDI & NOD! Feels like I have been waiting for this game for a long time. I know that Westwood has delayed releasing it to improve the game. The full retail version of Tiberian Sun is said to be released sometime in June.
